Where loneliness ends and community begins—that’s the true power of HALO

The World Health Organization has declared loneliness a global public health threat—on par with smoking and obesity. It’s linked to nearly 900,000 deaths each year worldwide—that’s more than 100 every hour.

And it’s not just older adults who are suffering. 80% of Gen Z report feeling lonely in the past 12 months, compared to less than half of baby boomers. A Gallup poll found that one in four men under 35—largely Gen Z and younger millennials—say they feel isolated, more than any other group

We’re also seeing how this disconnection is reshaping behavior. In the UK, 40% of nightclubs have closed in the past four years as younger generations move away from traditional nightlife and alcohol culture. Even in the U.S., Gen Z is seeking “soft clubbing”—coffee shop dance parties, sober social gatherings, yoga nights—as alternatives that feel more connected and authentic.

So where does that leave us?

Health, fitness, wellness clubs—and yes, salons and spas—are perfectly positioned to be the antidote.

We already know that exercise and wellness practices alter body chemistry in positive ways. But beyond that, our spaces can be hubs of belonging—places where people find connection, companionship, and community.

The loneliness epidemic is real. The demand for authentic connection is real. And our industry can rise to meet it.

To all HALO leaders—gym, salon, and spa owners—this is our chance to step forward. Not just to help people look and feel better, but to help them live longer, healthier, and more connected lives.
